U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (D-RI), who serves as a co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, issued the following statement today in response to reports that the U.S. Senate would consider an immigration reform proposal that lacks necessary safeguards for same-sex couples:
"I am deeply disappointed that the United States Senate has failed to include protections for all families in the immigration reform legislation by refusing to adopt provisions to protect same-gender couples in the name of political expediency. Many families will remain torn apart because of the absence of commonsense protections in this proposal. The refusal to protect all families and unite those that are separated because of the cruelty of the current system is deplorable."
