Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today applauded a $1.7 million investment by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in community health centers in Maryland. Last year, the state's 16 centers provided care to nearly 300,000 people.

"For many families, community health centers are the only option for getting the primary care they need," said Congressman Sarbanes. "As the health care reform law continues to expand coverage to people who have struggled without it, this investment will help Marylanders understand the options available to them to get healthy and stay healthy."

The funding will be used by Maryland's community health centers to hire and train staff who will be responsible for expanding outreach and education efforts about Maryland's state insurance exchange, raising awareness about insurance options and providing eligibility and enrollment assistance to uninsured patients and residents.
