Gov. Nixon Requests Financial Assistance from SBA to Residents and Businesses Impacted by Severe Storms and Flooding in April

In the wake of severe storms and flooding that hit the city of DeSoto and surrounding areas last month, Gov. Jay Nixon has requested a declaration from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) that would clear the way for financial assistance to impacted residents and businesses in Jefferson County and five contiguous counties: Franklin, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis and Washington. SBA disaster loans are issued to homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private, non-profit organizations to repair or replace real estate, personal property, machinery and equipment, inventory and business assets that have been damaged or destroyed.

"Jefferson County - and DeSoto, in particular - was subjected to severe storms and flooding from April 16-26 that caused extensive damage from wind, water and hail," Gov. Nixon said. "Even as we continue to work at the state level to ensure that communities have the critical resources, assets and personnel to rebuild and recover, I'm seeking this disaster declaration from the SBA to make this financial assistance available to help our citizens and businesses keep moving forward."

Gov. Nixon issued two executive orders on April 19 related to the storm system. One order declared a state of emergency, activating the State Emergency Operations Plan; the other order activated the Missouri National Guard.
