U.S. Representative Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) issued the following statement tonight after President Obama announced the firing of acting IRS Commissioner Steve Miller following reports that the agency targeted conservative groups for additional scrutiny in their tax filings:
"The reprehensible actions by some IRS employees and willful withholding of information to Congress reflect an absence of leadership at the highest levels. The firing of the acting IRS Commissioner was an absolutely appropriate first step, but more is needed to ensure similar actions are not repeated against conservative or any other groups. The President has a responsibility to work cooperatively with Congress to ensure safeguards are put in place and he must repair this serious breach of trust with the American people. I agree with Speaker Boehner that laws were broken and prosecution of the offenders must occur."
