U.S. Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz (PA-13) issued the following statement tonight May 15, 2013 following President Obama's remarks regarding the IRS. Schwartz is currently serving in her third term on the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax policy, including oversight of the IRS.
A tenet of our democracy is the public's faith and confidence in all levels of government. Across the political spectrum, we are all outraged at this failure of leadership, appalling lack of management oversight, and the egregiously bad judgment shown by the Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the agency's Exempt Organization section responsible for nonprofit civic and organizations.
It was essential that the Administration took decisive action in calling for and accepting the resignation of Acting Commissioner Steven Miller. As Congress investigates this serious matter, the Administration must be completely transparent and forthcoming in their investigation and decisively hold accountable all those involved in these inexcusable betrayals of the public trust.
