Senator Jay Rockefeller today issued the following statement regarding reports that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allegedly targeted conservatives groups that applied for tax-exempt status.
"IRS actions to target groups based on their beliefs are deeply troubling and wholly unacceptable," said Rockefeller. "The IRS has a job to do here -- which is to make sure under the law that tax-exempt social welfare organizations aren't engaged in campaign activity -- but it's non-negotiable that IRS agents in Cincinnati and everywhere else must do that work in a totally non-partisan, even-handed way.
"The Senate Finance Committee has launched a bipartisan investigation. We'll review carefully the independent Inspector's General report and tackle the key questions of what happened, how it was handled, who is responsible, and how it's going to be fixed."
