Congresswoman Beatty Stands with Working Families on H.R. 1406

Statement

Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-3) voted against the Working Families Flexibility Act, H.R. 1406, due to the devastating effects it would have on working families in the 3rd District of Ohio and across the nation.

H.R. 1406 would give employers the ability to substitute overtime pay to their workers with compensatory time. However, workers pay would go into an employer-controlled pot to be paid later and used at the employer's discretion. Additionally, workers would not get paid for work weeks exceeding 40 hours, which means workers, would be faced with the untenable trade-off of working more hours and bringing home less income for their families.

"I stand with hard-working American families that deserve the pay they have earned for the work they have rendered. If we are going to take working mothers and fathers away from their families then they should be compensated accordingly."

"Unfortunately, this is another assault on workers' rights and on individuals willing to work a little extra to provide and make opportunities for their families. Instead of attempting to punish these individuals from earning additional funds, we should applaud them for their hard work."

"In my opinion, ideological driven bills such as H.R. 1406 have no place in the 113th Congress. In order for Congress to begin working together and helping working families, we need to take these types of divisive measures off of the table and look at long term fiscal solutions that work."
