Gov. Nixon issued the following statement today regarding action by the Missouri Senate Veterans' Affairs and Health Committee to protect funding for First Steps:
"For more than two decades, with strong bipartisan support, the First Steps program has provided targeted and effective early intervention services for infants and children with developmental disabilities or delays," Gov. Nixon said. "These services help families give their children the best possible start, and reduce the need for more costly interventions later in life. Unfortunately, funding for this longstanding and fiscally responsible program is in jeopardy. Today's action by the committee is an important step toward ensuring infants and toddlers with developmental disabilities will continue to receive the services they need to reach their full potential. For the benefit of the thousands of families who depend on First Steps services each year, I urge the legislature to continue to make progress on this important issue."
