Statement on Proposed Closing of the David Kenyon Juvenile Justice

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.), member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in response to the proposed closing of the David Kenyon Juvenile Justice Center.

"I'm deeply concerned about the potential closure of David Kenyon Juvenile Justice Center. Specifically, I worry about the impacts such a closure would have on the delivery of services to underserved communities across South Los Angeles. For many, Kenyon is the most convenient and accessible location to receive the legal services they are guaranteed as American citizens. Its closure could potentially undermine this principle as it would impact the ability of citizens to reasonably access the court system. Reducing access to programs such as "Star Court," which allows trafficking victims a safe environment for legal proceedings and the possibility for court dates to be missed simply due to the distance people will have to travel to attend court proceedings in a new location are quite concerning. I urge all community stakeholders to work with the public in determining a sensible approach in dealing with the court systems budget challenges while doing everything we can to minimize the disruptions citizens may experience in accessing these much-needed services."
