Reid Statement On April Employment Report

Location: Washington, DC

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement on the April employment report. According to the Labor Department, 165,000 jobs were added in March and the unemployment rate dropped to 7.5 percent, the lowest in the past four years. Also, a revision by the bureau showed job gains in March and February were larger than previously reported:

"Month after month we have seen that the way to create jobs is to combine targeted investments with smart spending cuts and policies that ask the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share - not Republicans' austerity agenda. Today's report is no exception. Our job growth would be even stronger if our economy were not hampered by the meat-ax austerity Republicans have insisted upon for the past two years, instead of working with Democrats to forge a balanced approach to deficit reduction.

"To accelerate job gains for those Nevadans and Americans across our nation still looking for work, Republicans should work with Democrats to replace the sequester with a balanced approach that combines job-creating investments with targeted cuts and revenue measures that close loopholes and ensure that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share. I hope my Republican colleagues will put political games aside and start cooperating with Democrats for the good of the middle class."
