House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today commemorating Cinco de Mayo, which is Sunday:
"On Sunday, families across America will celebrate both the courage of the defenders of Puebla in 1862 and the extraordinary contributions Mexican-Americans continue to make to our national life. In defeating a foreign army that posed a threat to Mexico's independence and to American interests, the outnumbered Mexican defenders heroically laid the foundation for the deep cultural, economic, and political ties that bind our two countries to this day. I join in honoring the many Mexican-Americans who have helped shape our country in the fields of business, government, education, science, workers' rights, the arts and our national defense. In marking this Cinco de Mayo, let us continue to further strengthen the relationship between the United States and Mexico, and ensure that the Mexican-American community continues to receive the recognition it is due for helping build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous country for all Americans."
