House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Barack Obama nominated Penny Pritzker to be the next Secretary of Commerce and Michael Froman to be the next U.S. Trade Representative:

"In selecting Penny Pritzker as his nominee to be our next Secretary of Commerce, President Obama has tapped a talented and experienced individual who is committed to making sure U.S. businesses can compete and succeed in the global marketplace. As one of our nation's leading businesswomen, Ms. Pritzker has already served the Administration ably as a member of the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board and on the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, helping devise strategies for American businesses to grow jobs that move our recovery forward and expand opportunities for our middle class. I look forward to working with Ms. Pritzker to advance the goals of House Democrats' Make It In America jobs plan, and I join in thanking Acting Secretary Rebecca Blank for her service leading the Commerce Department over the past several months.

"I am also glad that the President has nominated Michael Froman to work closely alongside Ms. Pritzker as our nation's next U.S. Trade Representative. After serving as Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs, Mr. Froman brings to his new role a depth of experience in trade negotiations that will help him advance American economic interests overseas. House Democrats' Make It In America jobs plan prioritizes opening new markets for U.S. goods and ensuring a level playing field for American businesses and workers, and I am glad the President has chosen someone who can continue the excellent work of outgoing U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

"I hope the Senate will move quickly to confirm both of these nominations, so Ms. Pritzker and Mr. Froman can get to work as soon as possible."
