House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking Jewish American Heritage Month:
"It is fitting that we celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month during the Spring, as the history of the Jewish community in our country has been one of new beginnings. For the millions of Jewish refugees who came to our shores seeking a better life, America has provided both a beacon of opportunity and a chance to contribute to the growth and success of our shared American enterprise. The contributions of Jewish Americans to our national life have been innumerable, and they have left an indelible mark on our history, society, economy, and government.
"The deep roots of the Jewish community in America are reflected every day in the close and unshakable bond between our country and the State of Israel -- as well as in America's moral leadership in ensuring the world never forgets the tragedy of the Shoah while working to prevent genocide around the world. I have been privileged to participate firsthand in forging this enduring bond by working to help Soviet Jews emigrate to Israel and America during the Cold War as well as by working in Congress to enhance security and intelligence cooperation between the United States and Israel. I am proud to join in celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month and thanking the Jewish community in our country for all it has done to help build a stronger America for all of its people."
