U.S. Representative Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18) announced today his cosponsorship of H.Res. 174, a resolution calling on House Leadership to immediately appoint budget conferees so Congress can work toward a balanced grand bargain that addresses spending, deficit reduction, job creation, and economic growth to get our nation's fiscal house in order. In addition to calling for regular order in the budget process, which means the Speaker of the House should immediately name conferees to come to the table to negotiate a balanced budget resolution, Murphy is calling for a return to regular order for all House business.
"Last week, Congress missed its legal deadline of April 15th to pass a final budget resolution. The American people are tired of the political gamesmanship of Congress ducking its responsibility to pass a budget and deal with the pressing issues facing our nation. That is why I voted earlier this year to withhold Member pay if a budget was not passed on time," said Rep. Murphy. "Our economy cannot afford another 'do-nothing' Congress that ignores regular order and doesn't do it's job. That is why I am calling on House Leadership to return to regular order and immediately appoint budget conferees so that we can work together in a bipartisan manner toward the grand bargain that we so desperately need to put our country on sound fiscal footing."
