Cramer Participates in Hearing to Improve Livestock Grazing Permit Process

Today Congressman Kevin Cramer participated in a hearing for a bill designed to improve the permitting process for livestock grazing on public lands. The Grazing Improvement Act, cosponsored by Cramer, will grant greater economic certainty to ranchers and landowners by extending the longevity of grazing permits and decreasing the wait period for permit renewals.

"North Dakota ranchers already face a wide array of challenges in their daily work, including rapid changes in commodity prices and weather variability. The last thing they should be burdened with is unnecessary red tape from Washington. We need to give all our ranchers greater certainty so they can focus on producing our nation's food supply," Cramer said.

The Bureau of Land Management manages over 17,000 livestock grazing permits across 155 million acres of public lands in the western United States. In recent years, an increasing backlog of lawsuits from environmental groups, coupled with added layers in the permit approval process, has created difficulties for many landowners and ranchers.

"We are grateful that the House has introduced the Grazing Improvement Act," said Julie Ellingson of the North Dakota Stockmen's Association. "It is an important piece of legislation that will help save taxpayers money and provide business certainty for the ranchers who hold federal grazing permits and employ thoughtful stewardship of the grasslands."

The hearing was held by the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulation. Cramer serves on the Natural Resources and Science, Space and Technology Committees.
