CONGRESSMAN RYAN: PRESIDENT'S BUDGET IS BAD FOR THE 17TH DISTRICT
FEBRUARY 8, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman Tim Ryan today rejected the Bush Administration's 2006 budget as reckless, irresponsible, and bad for the citizens of the 17th Congressional District.

"President Bush spent his first four years making tax cuts to the wealthiest one percent of Americans his top priority. Now, when the federal deficit is spiraling out of control and there is no choice but to reign in federal spending, President Bush decides to do it on the backs of my constituents and all hard working class Americans and at the expense of our nation's safety," said Ryan. "This budget shortchanges our national priorities and education, health, national security"at the worse possible time, leaving America less safe.

"I find it unconscionable that the President believes that protecting trillions of dollars in tax breaks for the wealthy, while cutting billions in education, health care, housing, homeland security, and environmental programs is the right thing to do," said Ryan .

"This budget is not consistent with the values we hold as Americans," said Congressman Ryan. "The President is asking Congress to slash funding for local firefighters, police officers, and border patrol agents as terrorists threaten our security at home. This budget raises healthcare costs for hundreds of thousands of veterans and imposes new enrollments fees that will cost our veterans hundreds of millions of dollars while our troops"all future veterans"fight to keep us safe. Programs to strengthen America's manufacturing base are also being slashed at a time when domestic manufacturers and their skilled work force need help most."

"Over the coming months, I will fight for a budget that reflects the values of America's middle class: national security, health, education, and opportunity," continued Congressman Ryan.
