U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty (OH-03), released the following statement in response to the President's announcement to nominate Congressman Mel Watt (NC-12) to head the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
"It is with great pleasure and honor that I fully support President Obama on his nomination of my distinguished colleague, Representative Mel Watt, to serve as the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Congressman Watt is supremely qualified for the position based on his experience and expertise in housing policy and consumer protection. He will be an outstanding addition to the Obama Administration's leadership.
"Representative Watt's career consists of 20 years of service in Congress where he serves on the House Financial Services and Judiciary Committees, and prior to that, more than two decades working in the private sector as a small business owner and expert in real estate, consumer protection and business development law.
"In addition to expanding economic opportunities for the middle class, Representative Watt has developed a proven track record of fighting to rein in deceptive lending practices as part of the Dodd-Frank Act, protecting consumers from abusive financial practices, expanding access to affordable housing and working across the aisle to find common ground on these and other critical issues.
"I congratulate Representative Watt, who is a dear friend and mentor to me and venerable Member of Congress. I encourage my colleagues in the Senate to confirm his nomination as quickly as possible -- knowing that he will continue his legacy of excellent service to our country."
