Rep. McKinley Reintroduces Bipartisan Legislation to Streamline Black Lung Benefits Paperwork

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-W.Va.) introduced the Burdensome Paperwork Reduction for our Miners Act which would direct the Secretary of Labor to conduct a review of forms required to obtain benefits under the Federal Black Lung Benefits Program.

"Upwards of 50 pages are required at times merely to apply for the benefits," said McKinley. "That's just wrong, both for our miners who need the benefits and for the taxpayers who foot the cost."

Rep. McKinley heard from constituents who are concerned about the amount and redundancy of materials required when filling out paperwork for federal Black Lung benefits during roundtable discussions in the First District.

"This legislation will require the Department of Labor to streamline the paperwork and reduce the burdens on miners," added McKinley. "This bill will help our miners who are on their hands and knees each day so we can have the electricity we need. Their jobs are dangerous and difficult enough, the least we can do it reduce the paperwork for benefits they need."
