Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to commend President Obama for nominating Anthony Foxx, Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, to be the next Secretary of Transportation:
"In nominating Mayor Anthony Foxx, President Obama has selected an outstanding and dedicated public servant to lead the Department of Transportation. For the past four years, Secretary Ray Lahood has delivered tremendous results in reinforcing our safety, protecting our investment in transit, and prioritizing high-speed rail. Learning from Secretary LaHood's extraordinary leadership, Mayor Foxx will bring the same commitment, passion, and vigor to building our country's foundation for a quality, sustainable, and safe 21st century transportation system.
"Under Mayor Foxx, the city of Charlotte has thrived as a leader in the high-tech industry, in public transportation, and in job creation. In his four years in office, he completed major upgrades to Charlotte's airport, highways, and bridges while working together with business leaders to spur economic development around the city's light-rail system. He understands that an investment in our infrastructure is an investment in job creation, in business growth, and in the competitiveness of our country worldwide.
"I look forward to working with Mayor Foxx on supporting a national infrastructure and transportation system that will strengthen America's standing as the unsurpassed leader in the global economy. While he has large shoes to fill, he brings a renewed energy and diversity to the President's Cabinet that will help our country create jobs, strengthen the middle class, and secure a brighter future for generations to come."
