Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after President Obama released his FY2014 budget, affirming critical Connecticut defense priorities:
"The President's budget outlines a very solid commitment to the two-subs-per-year build rate I have worked hard to secure over the past six years. It also continues important foundational design work on the OHIO class replacement, and crystallizes the critical role submarines will are playing in national security and intelligence-gathering efforts.
"Although I do not agree with everything in the President's budget--including the use of chained CPI to determine Social Security benefits--I am committed to protecting the gains we have made in submarine production. These are gains that are fueling job growth in southeastern Connecticut, not just at Electric Boat, but at small businesses up and down their supply chain."
Specifically, the President's budget includes:
$5.4 billion request for two Virginia-class subs and advance procurement funding for two
ships planned in 2015.
$1 billion continue to design the OHIO class ballistic missile submarine replacement.
