The Duckworth Diary is a weekly note from Congresswoman Duckworth that updates constituents on her work in Congress. It will include recent meetings, important votes, and other information designed to make our office more transparent and accessible to the people of the 8th district. Check back each Friday for the latest news!
Dear Neighbors of the 8th District,
This week, I cosponsored legislation to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling. I know that my neighbors who are struggling to pay for college can't afford higher interest rates and I'll continue working to make education more affordable for working families.
During a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Thursday, I asked Secretary Hagel about cutting wasteful defense spending and stressed the importance of keeping the National Guard and Reserves an operational force.
Tuesday was Equal Pay Day, and I gave a speech on the House floor advocating equal pay for equal work.
Finally, I spent a lot of time on transportation issues this week. First, I met with Congressman Rahall, Ranking Member on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, to talk about investments in transportation, including the Highway Trust Fund. I also met with members of the Illinois Trucking Association to discuss our road network, and with Bosch Rexroth, which has an office in Hoffman Estates, to talk about how transportation investments make it easier for our businesses to transport goods across the country.
