Gov. Jack Dalrymple today told Fargo and Cass County officials that the state is prepared to assist in the event of major flooding along the Red River. The governor outlined the state's potential flood response during a flood preparation meeting held at Fargo City Hall.

Dalrymple said about 4,000 North Dakota National Guard members can be available to assist in flood-fighting efforts. The Department of Emergency Services, the Department of Health and other state agencies also are prepared to provide flood assistance, he said.

"I applaud the city of Fargo, Cass County and the many volunteers who have once again banded together to fill sandbags and to take the many other steps that are critical in preparing for another fight against a rising Red River," Dalrymple said. "You are not in this fight alone.

"The state will continue to work closely with local officials to ensure that state resources, both personnel and equipment, are available for a quick response to spring flooding," Dalrymple said.

Dalrymple and North Dakota Brig. Gen. Alan Dohrmann attended the meeting to coordinate the state's flood response with local leaders. The state and local officials discussed the latest National Weather Service data, city and county flood protection measures, and shared information about available resources.

Following the meeting, Dalrymple visited Fargo's Sandbag Central where he helped stack sandbags and thanked volunteers for their service to Fargo and Cass County.

Fargo and Cass County officials are preparing for a record flood along the Red River. Fargo city officials plan to build levees to as high as 44 feet. The city resumed sandbag operations this week to fill another 500,000 sandbags in addition to the 1.3 million sandbags held in reserve.
