Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Senate's working group unveiled its bipartisan proposal for comprehensive immigration reform:
"This week, a bipartisan coalition in the Senate moved our country one step closer to achieving common-sense, comprehensive immigration reform. Under the leadership of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, House Democrats have spent years working to bring about legislation that preserves our values, strengthens our democracy, and reflects who we are as a nation.
"As Americans, we stand on the shoulders of generations of families, entrepreneurs, and students who have come to our shores, contributed to our economy, advanced our society, and made real the American Dream. The Senate's proposal honors that heritage, giving 11 million undocumented immigrants a path to earned citizenship while uniting families, protecting workers, and securing our borders. Three years after House Democrats passed the DREAM Act, this proposal offers DREAMers a chance to more quickly become citizens in the only country they've ever called home.
"Securing humane, equitable, and inclusive reform will require further consideration and debate. But this proposal builds on the core tenets that are necessary to move forward. If we continue working together in the spirit of compassion, commitment, and compromise, we can--and will--make comprehensive immigration reform the law of the land."
