Congressman Lou Barletta, PA-11, today praised Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett for prioritizing the necessary funding for the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway, otherwise known as the Sunbury Bypass. The bypass would be built with the aid of $150 million in federal funds Rep. Barletta helped preserve. Gov. Corbett recently announced his commitment to providing state money to allow the project to proceed.

Barletta joined Rep. Tom Marino, PA-10, in applauding the announcement.

"This would be a huge project for the Sunbury area and would help ease congestion," Rep. Barletta said. "In addition, it would also help create and sustain many, many jobs."

Barletta worked to protect the funding in the most recent federal highway bill and helped prevent it from being used for other projects. In working on the legislation, Barletta recalled his own experience as a small business owner in the road construction business.

"This breakthrough is important because it tells the local business owners that they can go forward and hire new workers to complete this project," Barletta said. "This is exactly why I support a new highway bill that extends at least five years, so that businesses can know how to plan and whether or not to buy new equipment or hire new employees."

Rep. Marino also expressed eagerness to see the project through to completion.

"I have worked in diligent support of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway since first being elected. I am pleased to see that the project will be fully supported by the Governor and I am anxious for the long overdue work on this project to begin," Rep. Marino said. "I will continue to work with the people from the central Susquehanna valley, state leaders in Harrisburg, and my colleagues in Washington to see the thruway to completion."
