Congressman Rohrabacher votes for Long Overdue Reforms to Identification and Asylum Policies

Real ID Act Also Strengthens the California/Mexico Border and Deportation Laws

Washington, Feb 10 - Today Representative Rohrabacher, an original co-sponsor, voted in favor of H.R. 418, The Real ID Act of 2005.

"The fact that illegal immigrants have been able to obtain a driver's license, a privilege in this country, just demonstrates the complete failure of our immigration policies," said Rep. Rohrabacher. "This Act is a step in the right direction and will ensure that anyone trying to obtain a driver's license must actually prove they are who they say they are.

This Act will no doubt make it more difficult for terrorists to obtain officially recognized identification that would permit them access to airports and other potential targets."
The bill passed the House of Representatives 261 to 161. The bill is expected to be attached to "must-pass" legislation such as the Defense Supplemental Appropriations Bill and then sent to the Senate for approval.

"The massive tide of illegal immigration continues to threaten our economy and our security," stated Rep. Rohrabacher. "Furthermore, illegal immigration provides a cover for terrorists and once they cross the border, finding them is akin to finding the needle in the haystack. Until we address our immigration policies as a whole and crack down on the incentives and benefits provided to illegal immigrants, terrorists will continue to be lost in a sea of people crossing our borders illegally. This is not a risk that we can continue to take without paying a severe price."
