U.S. Rep. C. W. Bill Young said he is pleased that the FAA Friday delayed the closure of the air traffic control tower at Albert Whitted Airport in St. Petersburg and 148 other contract towers across the country.

"I am glad that in deference to safety, the FAA has taken more time to look at the impact the closure of these towers would have on aviation safety," Young said. "In particular, I hope the FAA makes use of the time available from this delay to take a hard look at the issues I raised in my letter last week about the specific safety reasons that they should remove Albert Whitted from the list of towers to be closed."

Young wrote the FAA Administrator last week citing a number of safety concerns related to Albert Whitted's location in a congested, urban airspace that is surrounded by two major international airports, MacDill Air Force Base, and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, the largest and busiest Coast Guard Air Station in the world.
