Statement on S. 649, the Firearms Bill, and the Manchin-Toomey Amendment

Statement

Date: April 11, 2013
Issues: Guns

Last week, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., voted to bring S. 649, the Firearms bill, to the Senate floor for debate.

"I am very much opposed to any bill that would infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans. In my opinion, the underlying bill being debated on the Senate floor violates those constitutional rights. That said, this is a national issue that deserves a thorough Senate debate. I will continue to stand up for Americans' Second Amendment rights."

In addition, after a thorough review of the Manchin-Toomey amendment to S. 649, the Firearms bill, Sen. Chambliss has stated that he will not vote for that amendment.

"I am a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and I know that Sens. Manchin and Toomey are too. But I don't think their amendment is the right way to go about solving this problem. I will vote against their proposal when it comes before the Senate."
