House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Barack Obama announced his budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2014:
"The President's budget proposal is a serious compromise to reduce deficits in a balanced way. It does not ignore the deep fiscal challenges we face, and it makes tough concessions that recognize that the parties must come together to achieve the balanced agreement we need to turn off the sequester and set America back on a stable fiscal path. It also recognizes the need to take action on job creation and growing our economy, and invests in our manufacturing sector.
"The House and Senate have passed their budget proposals, and now it is time for a conference committee to meet and negotiate a final version that is balanced and that invests in growing our economy and creating opportunities for our middle class. This ought to include measures that create jobs by helping our businesses compete and innovate. Both sides must come together to reach an agreement that combines responsible, targeted spending cuts and new revenues. I remain hopeful that Democrats and Republicans can put country before party and work together to craft a budget for 2014 based on the kind of common-sense proposals the President put forward today and a commitment to moving America forward."
