Senator Jay Rockefeller today issued the following statement after the Senate passed its budget.
"This Senate budget provides a balanced approach to federal spending and reducing our deficit. Most importantly, it puts our economy and American families first. West Virginians deserve for the Congress to act in their best interest, and in the best interest of everyone who works hard but often still struggles. While this budget isn't perfect -- as I continue to strongly believe that we need more revenues to put our country on a sustainable fiscal path -- it's the right next step for our country. And it keeps the promises we've made to our seniors, families, veterans, and communities.
"It's also good news for West Virginia and this country that the Senate voted down the House Republicans' so-called "Ryan" budget. The Ryan budget isn't anything new and voting on it yet again this year doesn't change the harmful effect it would have on low and middle income families just trying to get by. Shredding crucial safety net programs in the name of deficit reduction isn't honest or courageous, and it's a slap in the face to millions of families who count on those programs, particularly during tough times."
