First Children Light Governor's Mansion Blue for World Autism Awareness Day

Press Release

Location: Columbia, SC

As Governor Nikki Haley and First Gentleman Michael Haley issued a proclamation recognizing Autism Awareness Month in South Carolina, the First Children, Rena (14) and Nalin (11), lit the Governor's Mansion blue on Tuesday, April 2, as part of World Autism Awareness Day.

"Autism is near and dear to our hearts," said Gov. Haley. "It affects our families, friends, classmates and colleagues, and there's nothing more important than letting those with autism know that they are loved. We celebrate their contributions to our lives."

According to Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, autism affects 1 in 88 children (1 in 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls) in the United States.
