Congresswoman Duckworth Calls for Equality in the Workplace on Equal Pay Day

Location: Unknown

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth released the following statement on Equal Pay Day:

Equal Pay Day is an opportunity for all Americans to speak out against the pay inequity that exists in our country. The fact that women only make $.77 on the dollar nationally not only hurts women, but also working families trying to make ends meet. Women in Illinois on average earn nearly $12,000 less than their male counterparts and I know that my neighbors believe that our daughters deserve better. During my service in the Army, I earned equal pay for equal work and this policy has helped to make our military the best in the world.

I am proud that the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law in 2009 and expanded the ability of women to demand justice for discriminatory paychecks. Still, Congress has much work left to do. I am a cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would prevent retaliation against women who stand up for their right to equal pay. Congress needs to act swiftly to pass this legislation and give every American the opportunity to earn equal pay for equal work.
