Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today issued the following statement regarding the passing of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher:
"Today America joins our friends in the United Kingdom in mourning the loss of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but we celebrate her remarkable legacy. Mrs. Thatcher was a revolutionary and transformative leader who demonstrated the importance of putting sound policies above politics for the good of her country and the world. Together with President Ronald Reagan, the two formed a dynamic pair of world leaders that had a major influence on international affairs at a critical time in history. Whether it was her controversial fiscal measures to restore Britain's economy or her decision to stand with the United States to end the Cold War, Mrs. Thatcher was a woman of courage and conviction and her legacy should serve as an inspiration to all elected officials."
Thatcher, known as the "Iron Lady," served from 1975 to 1990 as leader of the Conservative Party. She was the first female British prime minister.
