Owens Statement on Alcoa Modernization Announcement

Recently, leadership at Alcoa announced that they will invest in a significant modernization of their Massena East smelter. In addition, the company will provide $10 million in support of the North Country Economic Development Fund. Congressman Bill Owens applauded the move and made the following statement on the announcement:

"The modernization of Alcoa's Massena operation secures a significant piece of economic development for the North Country and is welcome news for employees, their families and local labor in the community," said Congressman Bill Owens. "Our incredible workforce should be proud of all they have done to make Massena a place companies want to stay and invest, and I look forward to seeing the full results of this effort come to fruition."

Alcoa has committed $42 million for "site preparation" as part of a $600 million modernization effort. In return, Alcoa will continue to receive low cost power from the State Power Authority. The move affirms the strong relationship between Northern New York and Alcoa, and preserves the 900 jobs that are associated with their Massena operations.
