Today, Congressman Bill Foster (IL-11) toured the facilities at Argonne National Laboratory and called for increased funding for research and development for national labs.

"President Obama recently visited Argonne National Laboratory and spoke about the need to make America a magnet for good jobs and protect our "spirit of innovation.' We can only do that if we support our innovators and the work they do at places like Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and our national labs throughout the country.

"Every farmer knows you don't give up your seed corn when times are tough -- though we may still be in a period of economic recovery, we can't cut back on research and development, which is the seed corn of American innovation. Yet funding for our national labs is constantly under threat. Not only do they face across the board cuts from sequestration, but the Ryan budget, which House Republicans passed last week, would have cut over 17% of all non-defense R&D funding through 2017.

"It is critical that we lower our spending at the federal level and reduce our debt, but we shouldn't be doing it by cutting important research and development that drives our economy. In Congress, I will do all that I can to fight for funding which protects this critical work."

Congressman Foster recently testified to the House Budget Committee urging additional funding for scientific research and development, and has been in contact with both the Administration and the House Committee on Appropriations urging additional funding for the Department of Energy Office of Science.
