Minnesota Congressman John Kline released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 273, bipartisan legislation that continues the current federal government pay freeze and saves taxpayers an estimated $11 billion:
"In the face of increased prices at the pump and the slowest economic recovery since the Great Depression, Minnesotans are tightening their belts and the federal government needs to do the same. Hardworking Minnesota taxpayers should not be asked to subsidize a pay increase for federal employees. I was pleased to support bipartisan legislation today that prevents an automatic pay raise for the entire federal civilian workforce -- including members of Congress -- and continues the pay freeze for federal officials. Rather than providing pay raises, we should be fulfilling our responsibilities to our constituents by passing a balanced budget and addressing the fiscal crisis threatening our economic future."
