Congressman Bentivolio Introduces the Support Democracy in Egypt Act

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Yesterday, Congressman Kerry Bentivolio introduced the Support Democracy in Egypt Act. The bill temporarily suspends any further delivery of F-16 planes and Abrams tanks to Egypt until further review to ensure that they are promoting democracy and stability in their region.

"Arming President Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood with our military technology may not be the best way to promote freedom and stability in the Middle East," said Rep. Bentivolio. "We must ensure that our government is not adding fuel to the fire of chaos in an already volatile region. Supporting our allies and democracy in the Middle East must remain top priorities."

The Support Democracy in Egypt Act requires:

· The Executive Branch to give written confirmation or explanation as to why Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi is an ally of the United States and how he is working within our best interests in the Middle East before Congress can re-appropriate any future sales or deliveries of planes and tanks.

· President Morsi to show that he is pushing for freedom of speech and religion in Egypt.

· Egypt to abide by the 1979 treaty with Israel by policing the Sinai Peninsula in order to minimize the trafficking of weapons and drugs into the Gaza Strip.

The bill was introduced Monday evening with 4 co-sponsors -- Rep. Tim Griffin (AR-2), Rep. Dennis Ross (FL-15), Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (GA-3), and Rep. Ted Yoho (FL-3).
