Bipartanship to Flow Through Oceans Caucus

Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel) and Congressman Don Young (R-Alaska) will co-chair the bipartisan Oceans Caucus, dedicated to supporting ocean research and conservation. The caucus will once again consist of Members representing both coastal and inland districts who have a shared interest in keeping the water that encompasses more than 70 percent of the globe healthy for years to come.

"I believe that the oceans are our greatest natural resource and need to be protected for the sake of our economy and future generations," Congressman Farr said. "Not only do they connect people living on opposite sides of the globe, but also members of Congress sitting on different sides of the aisle. I look forward to working with Congressman Young as co-chairs in leading the caucus during this session of Congress. I trust that together we can make significant progress that will preserve the oceans that both our districts hold dear."

The bipartisan Oceans Caucus will work to raise awareness in Congress on a range of issues affecting the health of the oceans and the role healthy oceans play in strengthening the American economy, especially through job creation. Members hope to address marine debris, coastal resilience and recovery, and illegal fishing. This year, the numbers of Members in the bipartisan Oceans Caucus is expected to surpass last year's 76 Members.

"With over 34,000 miles of coastline, the oceans impact on Alaska is profound, both geographically and economically. From seafood to transportation, energy development to tourism, the health and well being of our oceans is vital," Congressman Young said. "Since I came to Congress 40 years ago, I have worked on ocean conservation with Members on both sides of the aisle on the Natural Resources Committee, and I am pleased and excited to take on this new role within the Oceans Caucus."

The co-chairs have already begun working together to save the oceans. Congressman Farr is proud to co-sponsor H.R. 584, which Congressman Young introduced to Amend the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to require labeling of genetically engineered fish.

Congressman Farr has co-chaired the Oceans Caucus since he founded it in 1999. Congressman Young represents all of Alaska and is the second longest serving Republican Member in the House.
