U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S (AZ-04) released the following statement after the Central Arizona Governments Regional Council voted overwhelmingly to support his Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013 (H.R. 687).
"I would like to thank the council for their overwhelming vote of support. As this public declaration by more than a dozen local stakeholders reaffirms, this project is a win-win for Arizona. Together, we can promote job creation, decrease mineral and energy dependence, and bolster Arizona's economy."
Congressman Gosar went on to state, "The deceitful and misguided efforts by the council of Superior are not representative of the will of the people in the town, or those in the surrounding area. Those involved should be ashamed of themselves."
Last night's vote came as representatives from Superior's rogue town council disregarded the will of the people in an effort to sneak a resolution of opposition on to the regional council's monthly meeting agenda. Instead the council voted in favor of Rep. Gosar's major jobs bill.
At the meeting, representatives from the City of Apache Junction, City of Eloy, Town of Kearny, Town of Mammoth, City of Maricopa, Town of Miami, City of Globe, Town of Payson, Town of Queen Creek, Town of Winkelman, Town of Florence, Pinal County, and Gila County all voted to scrap Superior's resolution of opposition and reaffirm the region's support for the legislation and the Resolution Copper mine.
