Frelinghuysen Statement on Iraq Elections
January 30, 2005

Washington, DC - Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (NJ-11) today issued the following statement regarding the elections in Iraq:

"Elections in Iraq represented the next step on the road to democracy and a new beginning for a country once ruled by the tyrannical regime of Saddam Hussein. Millions of Iraqis went to the polls and took a stand against terror by casting their votes for freedom and democracy. Even as terrorists attempted to disrupt the elections, the Iraqi people proved that they would not be intimidated. Like the Afghanistan and Palestinian elections, the elections in Iraq send a strong message to others populations that yearn for self determination. The Iraqi people have demonstrated the will to win and will not let those who hate freedom stand in their way. Once election results are tallied, a National Assembly will begin a nationwide effort to lay the groundwork for a constitution that embraces freedom and liberty for all Iraqi s regardless of their gender, religion, or ethnic origin and move to establish a government that is committed to peace, security and democracy."
