Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D., (R-South Louisiana) issued the following statement after signing the Stockman-Broun letter to Speaker Boehner expressing opposition to universal background checks on private firearms sales:
"An imposition of a universal background check system for private firearms sales would be an inefficient and ineffective use of the federal government's limited resources. As stated in this letter, perpetrators of gun-related crimes typically obtain their firearms through channels that are already illegal, and would not be flagged in this process.
"We should focus our attention on enforcing the laws already on the books instead of imposing a new and burdensome roadblock to the exchange of these goods between friends and neighbors. I urge my colleagues to use common sense in discussing this delicate issue and oppose universal background checks for private firearms sales."
