Rep. Garrett Congratulates Iraq on Recent Successful, Free and Fair Election
February 1, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ - 05) issued the following statement, praising the success of the democratic election in the recently liberated nation of Iraq.

"Under immense pressure and in fear of great danger, Iraqis turned out in great numbers this past weekend to exercise their newly granted right of political expression. Their courage and dedication deserves the admiration of each and every one of us.

As Iraqis cast their vote, they were not simply electing another leader - they were announcing their newfound free and democratic society to the world. Iraqis knew the risk of their political participation, but instead of hiding and cowering in fear, they were dancing in the streets celebrating their freedom.

Iraq now has the opportunity to keep the process of becoming a free nation moving forward. They will soon begin the process of ratifying a national constitution and they will continue building hospitals and schools as well as critical infrastructure.

This weekend, many Iraqis sampled the sweet taste of liberty that each American cherishes and holds near and dear to our hearts. I am confident that the Iraqis are up to the challenge of their continued efforts to establish a free and democratic society and I wish them all the best in this most noble of endeavors."

The road ahead will not be an easy one to travel. Terrorists and insurgents will continue to try and derail Iraq's movement towards a free and democratic society. That is why we must stay the course and ensure that Iraq develops into a truly free society capable of defending her liberties."
