Langevin Statement on Selection of New Pope

Statement

Date: March 13, 2013
Issues: Religion

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) released the following statement reacting to the selection of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, Pope Francis, as the next leader of the Catholic Church:

"As a Catholic, I'm moved by and deeply appreciative of the traditions carried on with today's pronouncement. I'm inspired by the selection of the first non-European Pope of the modern era and hope that Pope Francis will choose to serve as a unifying figure as he deals with the challenges and opportunities facing the Church. He has an incredible chance to be a transformative figure as the leader in spreading Catholicism's teachings of love and hope, and acting on those messages to make this a more peaceful and prosperous world for everyone."
