Murphy Statement on Black History Month

Statement

Date: Feb. 11, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18) made the following statement in recognition of Black History Month:

"As we celebrate Black History Month this year, we also mark two major milestones in America's history and the struggle for equal rights in our country: the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights March on Washington on August 28, 1963. Additionally, on February 1st we celebrated the 100th birthday of civil rights activist Rosa Parks.

"While we celebrate these momentous occasions and reflect on the tremendous progress our country has made in terms of civil rights and equality, we must also realize that there is still more work that needs to be done. I promise to work with my colleagues and local leaders to continue to move our country forward on a path to equality for all Americans."
