U.S. Representative Tom Rooney (FL-17) today issued the following statement on the Pentagon's decision to review the ranking of the Distinguished Warfare Medal in the military's order of precedence:
"I appreciate the Pentagon meeting the requests not just of lawmakers like myself, but of thousands of veterans across the country, by announcing a thorough review of the Distinguished Warfare Medal's ranking," Rooney said. "I encourage the Department of Defense to meet with representatives of our veterans, like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Military Order of the Purple Heart, as they complete this review.
"The order of precedence must reflect the courage and sacrifice of our troops, particularly those who put their lives on the line on the battlefield."
Last month, Rooney wrote the Department of Defense and urged them to complete a review of Distinguished Warfare Medal's ranking. He also cosponsored legislation that would block the Pentagon from ranking the new medal equal to or higher than the Purple Heart.
Rooney served in the U.S. Army JAG Corps. He sits on the House Intelligence Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs.
