More of the same: Rep. Barton not confident anything will change under new EPA leadership

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), Chairman Emeritus and senior Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement in response to President Obama's nomination of Gina McCarthy to be the next Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency:

"Ms. McCarthy has dedicated her professional life to protecting the environment, working for agencies at the state and federal level. I am hopeful that she will break new ground in the Obama Administration and actually enforce the laws already on the books, instead of pushing more extreme interpretations meant to placate the environmental lobby.

However, I would describe my past encounters with Ms. McCarthy as professional, but politely non-compliant so I'm not confident anything will change.

"New technologies have presented us with new opportunities. We are now accessing vast reservoirs of oil and natural gas that can make energy affordable for generations to come, while creating tens of thousands of jobs at the same time. We need to embrace these breakthroughs and this new found economic prosperity.

"I look forward to working with Ms. McCarthy, and I am sure we will be seeing her in front of the Energy and Commerce Committee very soon."
