Courtney statement on bipartisan passage of Violence Against Women Act

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Joe Courtney today released the following statement after he and a bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives voted to pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), 286-138:

"Today's vote is a huge victory for the American people, as it finally sends a bipartisan compromise VAWA bill to the president for his signature. Eighty-seven Republican House Members today joined every single Democratic Member to pass this overdue, essential bill that will protect victims and give law enforcement the tools they need to prosecute offenders.

"A special thank you goes to State's Attorney Patricia Froehlich and Major Michael Darcy of the State Police, who last week spotlighted the real-world applications and critical need for this bill in eastern Connecticut."
