Congressman Alan Lowenthal issued the following statement regarding the impending automatic federal budget cuts, known as the sequester. Congress is set to adjourn for recess today, just days before the sequester is set to take effect, and with no further debate scheduled:
"Today, along with many of my colleagues in the Congress, I signed a letter urging House Speaker Boehner to take immediate action to avoid more than $85 billion in budget cuts that threaten to impact Americans in every state, every district and every city. Now is the time for all of us in Congress to remain in Washington and work together to avoid a self-inflicted financial wound that promises to undermine job creation and imperil our economic recovery. Congress must remain in session and work to develop a balanced replacement to these across-the-board cuts. Doing nothing is not doing the work of the people."
