Today, U.S. Representative Blake Farenthold (TX-27) released the following statement following House passage of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA). The bill reauthorizes and consolidates previous VAWA grants to save taxpayer dollars. It also includes measures to reduce the backlog of rape kits, enhances penalties for assault, and addresses domestic violence and sexual assault on college campuses.
"As a husband and father of two daughters, I feel a moral obligation to stand up for the 1.3 million women who fall victim to domestic violence every year. Through the reauthorization of this bill, domestic violence victims will have what they need to escape their abuser, protect their families, and rebuild a better life. Though the Senate bill is not perfect, we can't wait to reauthorize this critical legislation. This issue is as important today as it was nearly 20 years ago when the first VAWA was passed."
