Washington Should Follows Same Rules American Families Follow: Live Within its Means

Today, U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce commented on the broad, automatic spending cuts, termed the "sequester," that begin today: "Washington desperately needs to reign in its out-of control spending," said Pearce, "but the sequester--with its automatic cuts to national security--is not the solution we need. I have opposed the approach from the beginning, because it weakens vital national security, and is damaging to New Mexico.

"However, the president is being irresponsible, calling cuts catastrophic," Pearce continued. "For the health of our economy and for the sake of jobs, I urge him to instruct every agency to find the two pennies to save out of every dollar spent that represent the amount of the sequester cuts. Hardworking American families are having to do much more than that."

Congress is leading by example. Rep. Pearce's operating budget as a member of Congress has been reduced by 11.5% over the last two years, and faces an additional 11% in this round of cuts.

Congressman Pearce recently held a telephone town hall meeting to discuss sequestration with constituents. On the call, 89% of participants said that they believe Washington is spending too much.
