Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Obama's announcement that he intends to nominate Ernest Moniz as Secretary of Energy, Gina McCarthy as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, and Sylvia Mathews Burwell as Director of the Office of Management and Budget:
"Today, President Obama nominated three strong, committed public servants with the experience and background necessary to help promote clean energy jobs, protect our environment, and enact budgets that reflect our nation's values.
"Secretary-designate Ernest Moniz will use his experience as an academic, a physicist, and an advocate to build on the historic efforts of President Obama's first term to preserve our environment and secure our energy future. His nomination reaffirms the administration's dedication to science and commitment to innovation.
"Gina McCarthy's lifetime of public service and career of leadership make her ideally suited to serve as the new EPA Administrator. Over the past four years, she has led efforts to raise fuel economy standards, maintain tough clean air standards, and protect public health. In her new role, she will lead the charge to build on those achievements, reduce harmful emissions, combat climate change, and defend our natural resources.
"Sylvia Mathews Burwell's career inside and outside government offers her a unique perspective and a strong foundation for her work as the next Director of the OMB. From the Clinton Administration to the Gates and Walmart Foundations, she possesses the know-how and skills to solve problems, build consensus, protect our middle class, and address our fiscal and economic challenges.
"Together, these nominees will stand side-by-side with President Obama as we build a better future for our middle class, our communities, and generations to come. House Democrats look forward to working with all of them to meet our goals for our nation's budget, our energy independence, and our environment."
